To enhance placemaking along the Upper Boon Keng and Kallang Bahru underpasses, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) rolled out a mural wall project, where individual squares of cement mural panels are lined up across both sides of the underpass walls (32 metres in length) to depict a continuous artwork. Thus, my family embarked on a 7 months long journey to create 92 1.35m x 1.35m cement mural panels.
The cement murals contain different textures, with some areas completely smooth while others are grain-like and rough, and also different levels, with some areas protruding outwards more than others. To accomplish these effects, mould pieces had to be cut out and pasted on a 1.35m x 1.35m acrylic board, such that when cement is poured over the mould, protruding effects can be seen in areas without the mould pieces.
To scan and cut mould pieces, we segmented and transformed mural designs into outlines. My siblings and I divided up work, such that I primarily digitalized and printed 3 panel designs on Adobe Illustrator. Once mould pieces were stuck on, cement was poured and left to dry to produce the finished products.
My family is proud to share that our hard work has been installed along the walls of the Upper Boon Keng Underpass and Kallang Bahru Underpass! Do go have a look and I hope you love them as much as we do :-)
